Sri Lanka recognized the need to address, at the global level, contemporary manifestations of racial discrimination such as xenophobia and related intolerance and reiterated its strong commitment to the core principles of equality and non-discrimination embodied in the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.
Intervening during the discussion on Report of the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent in the 24th session of the Human Rights Council on 24 September 2013, Additional Solicitor General Mr. Jayantha Jayasuriya stated that the Government of Sri Lanka has launched several initiatives to preserve the cultural identity of the small community of people of African Decent in Sri Lanka and, like all Sri Lankan citizens, they too enjoy the rights and privileges enshrined in the Constitution of Sri Lanka.
