President visits Beruwala, promises stern action against perpetrators of recent violence

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday promised to take stern action against the perpetrators of the communal violence in Aluthgama and Beruwala.

After visiting the areas of Beruwala and Aluthgama affected by the clashes between two groups of people, the President, who just returned from the Bolivia visit, reiterated he will not allow anyone to take law into their hands. An impartial investigation will be conducted into the incident and will definitely bring all culprits to the book irrespective of race or religious differences.


We, as a country suffered from terrorism for nearly thirty years, the President noted. He said he will not allow any such situation to re-emerge in the country.


Even though certain parties with vested interests are trying to re-create a Black July in a different form, the government is vigilant and taking all the precautions to avoid any such incident recurring, said the President. He emphasized that every community in the country should act with restraint, he urged.


During the tour to Beruwala he met Buddhist and Muslim religious leaders, security officials, political leaders and government officials at the Divisional Secretariat to inquire about the incidents.


The President instructed the district officials to make arrangements for the families aggrieved by the violence to receive compensation and to repair the damaged property.


He said measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in future by certain extremist groups.


Ministers Mervyn Silva, Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the Ministry of Law and Order retired Major General Nanda Mallawarachchi, Army Commander Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake and Inspector General of Police N.K. Ilangakoon accompanied the President.
