Presidential Secretary Lalith Weerathunga says that the best reply to be given to the statements made by the United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner Mrs. Navaneetham Pillai is to further strengthen the reforms programme. The government is committed to respond only to the people of Sri Lanka. Participating in a discussion programme over the SLBC, he further said that nobody should be unduly concerned over the statements made by Mrs. Navaneetham Pillai. Her statements lacked any foundation and they were made according to the information received from certain individuals.
However, the attempts of the opposition and other groups to fulfil their objectives through the high commissioner have turned futile. Some groups hoped that she would have stated that Sri Lanka should be brought before a military tribunal. Mr. Weerathunga has pointed out that their expectations were dashed. Sri Lanka has implemented many of the recommendations of the Commission on Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation within a short period.
